A brand with a foot firmly planted in two worlds, UNDERCOVER have been successfully combining the best of Japan’s high fashion aesthetic with some of its strongest streetwear motifs since 1994.
The branchild of Jun Takahashi, a contemporary of legendary Japanese designers Nigo and Hiroshi Fujiwara, UNDERCOVER have a style all of their own, giving new life to staid designs with an unconventional approach to graphics, materials and silhouettes.
Spring/Summer 2015 sees Takahashi move away from his eminent influence of British Punk and onto the New York rock scene of the 1970’s. More specifically, the virtuosic band Television, who’s music and lyrical content has informed the Japanese designer’s work for his entire range.
The new season collection is typically awash with prints baring the hallmarks of the NY group. For instance, ‘See No Evil’ – a seminal Television track – is plastered across a finely crafted crew sweatshirt, whilst ‘Too Much Contradiction’, a repetitive line that features throughout the band’s song ‘Friction’, adorns tees and a wonderfully constructed silk MA-1 Bomber Jacket.
A phalanx of perfectly printed pieces they maybe, the collection is also punctuated by luxury high-end touches, none more so than UNDERCOVER’s signature Leather Biker Jacket. Cut from superbly supple cow-hide leather, the jacket is the label’s refined re-working of a timeless classic featuring an asymmetric zip and a variety of zipped pockets, finished with a full gingham lining.
