The long standing collaboration between Yohji Yamamoto and adidas Originals has brought us some of the most iconic sneaker styles of recent years. From the instantly recognizable Qasa High to the more understated Retro Boosts, Y3 are at the peak of their relationship with every style injecting fresh yet successful ideas into the already strong lineup that has consisted of styles like the Boxing and Sprint over the years. For Autumn / Winter 2016, Y-3 introduce another new silhouette, the X Zip Low, which aims to blend classic Y-3 styling with adidas’ modern technology.

Y3 X Zip Low

Looking from a distance, the X Zip Low Trainer seems to be a sleek and simple shoe thanks to the Core Black colour way yet upon closer inspection, the X Zip Low is packed with overlapped panels and contrasting materials that culminate to create a seamless design. A base layer of stretchy nylon is covered with neoprene detail at the toe as well as a more supportive textile that adds shape and reinforcement to the silhouette. As seen on the recent Stan Zip and staying true to the ultra modern themes that Y-3 often uses as a basis, the X Zip Low uses a zip instead of a traditional lace up closure which not only rings true to the aesthetic aims of the shoe, but also emphasizes the sock like construction that the uppers materials imply. Of course, such a modern silhouette deserves modern technology and the inclusion of adidas’ critically acclaimed Boost for the midsole and sole adds unparalleled comfort to the shoe.

As ever, Y-3 branding can be found in the shoe. Borrowing ideas from the Yohji Boost, the X Zip Low has a reinforced heel strap that adorns the iconic three stripe detailing. The Side panels that house these straps are home to subtle Y-3 and Yohji Yamamoto branding.
